Top 3 Spring Baits!
This time of year the frost on the boat is getting less, the days are getting longer, and the bass are starting to bite. This article will break down the top 3 baits you need to be using this spring to catch more bass.
#1. Berkley Frittside 5,7 or 9 - Special Red Craw and Spicy Mustard
This bait is a sure way to catch some quality fish in the early spring as the bass start to move shallow. The Berkley Frittside has a tight wobble action that draws bass in. The bait comes straight out of the pack with the Berkley Fushion19 hooks that will keep those fish pinned.
The Frittside works great around rip rap banks, clay points, and grass lines. The weighted bill gets your bait down quicker to stay in the strike zone longer.
I’ve been throwing this bait in the Special Red Craw color around rip rap banks on secondary points in the major creeks that have a little stain to the water.
#2. Rapala Shadow Rap
The shadow rap has a life-like minnow appearance in the water. Using match-the-hatch, you can find the perfect color to match the forage in your body of water. When twitching the bait, you get a full 180-degree action with a slow “head down” fall on the pause.
The shadow rap is an excellent bait to throw on late winter suspended fish, secondary points leading to soon to be spawning creeks, and chasing bass with forward facing sonar. With two sharp twitches you can achieve a back and forth action that proves to be irresistible.
I’ve been using this bait in the ghost shiner color along with forward facing sonar to pick up some suspending fish on secondary points.
#3. Zoom Trick Worm
The Zoom Trick Worm is the original floating worm but still proves to be a great option for a variety of presentations. The 6.5” bait is salt impregnated allowing it to float so it allows for the perfect presentation.
The trick work is a staple in so many tackle boxes. It has so many rigging options but in the spring, it is deadly on a shaky head. Put it on your favorite jig head and cast around docks, on points, and into lay downs. As the spring progresses, this will also be deadly thrown weightless around docks and spawning areas.
I always keep a shaky head rigged with a Green Pumpkin trick worm tied on year round. I throw it around docks and general areas where bass will be moving up for the spring this time of year.
Bonus: AFTCO Reaper Hoodie
The AFTCO Reaper is an excellent hoodie for those chilly mornings in the spring. This hoodie includes all the qualities of a well designed hoodie including softness, comfort, and warmth. The built in face mask is also great for those early morning boat runs.
